The Mohave County Probation Department began the Detention Work Furlough Program in 2007. Non-violent, low-risk JIPS and Standard Probationers who are found to be in violation of the conditions of their probation are referred to this program by their probation officer. Each juvenile ordered by the Court into the program must report to the detention center on a Friday evening. Early Saturday morning, the juveniles are released to Surveillance Officer Art Mayo who transports and supervises them. The work projects consist of physical labor for specifically set projects. No more than six youth at a time participate in these work projects. When the youth are returned to the facility mid-afternoon, they are tired and dirty. But they feel a sense of accomplishment and a sense of pride in the work they have accomplished.

The purpose of this program is to give the probation officers an alternative to filing a petition to revoke a juvenile’s probation. It provides the juvenile an opportunity to complete Community Restitution Hours that may not have been completed. It also provides the juvenile with an opportunity to participate in a community project in which they can take pride and in which they can have ownership in the outcome. Juveniles from Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City and Kingman participate in these projects.
